Een foto is nooit zomaar alleen een foto. Bij schilderkunst is dat al zeker sinds Fontana geen nieuw gegeven maar bij fotografie zie je het slechts zelden dat ook de sculpturale kwaliteiten van het medium worden uitgebuit. Ga naar bijvoorbeeld Unseen en je ziet eigenlijk alleen maar keurige printjes al dan wel of niet ingelijst.
Letha Wilson (1976) is zo’n kunstenaar die juist wel de ruimtelijke aspecten van de foto gebruikt. Maar ook de drager van de foto blijkt niet geheel vanzelfsprekend. Of de drager papier of een metaal is maakt voor de verschijning van het beeld een enorm verschil op het moment dat de foto meer is dan een ingelijst ding.
Beeldhouwen met foto’s dus, de afbeeldingen als een decor waarin handelingen plaats vinden.
